The White Bell
Documentary, 1961, 35mm, B/W, mono, 20'
The film is both a portrait of a city and of a small child – a documentary with staged elements showing an episode of a young girl’s daily life in the lively, seething heart of the city. The film brilliantly documents the fast-growing Rîga of the 1960s, while also reservedly showing the daily rush of its inhabitants. White Bells is considered one of the best Latvian documentaries and an excellent example of poetic cinema. The film made it to the list of the top 100 short films of all time in France.
