It is almost a century since a witness of anciet culture, the narrow-gauge railway, is rambling through Latvia. In a sluggish pace, outstripped by numerous express trains of the latest generation, it is measuring the 30 kilometres between Gulbene and Aluksne, two townships of Latvia. The little engine appears between the soft-lined hills of the Latvian landscape and then vanishes in a puff of smoke like a relic of bygone time. It is a modern world of the mechanical civilisation although having been the first messenger of this realm. |
