HISTORY BEHIND THE SCREEN Vēsture aiz kadra
Documentary, dir. Romualds Pipars, 97’, HD, Latvia, 2018

The unpublished history of national awakening and the restoration of the Republic of Latvia – Latvian documentarians tell stories of shooting legendary footage, of what they saw and experienced during the course of historic events but did not capture on film due to various reasons. This is a story of what was felt and experienced at a time when Latvia was exceptionally united.

Each country has its visual history - images and films that have become iconic, and tell about the events that shaped the people into a nation. For Latvians, some of the most iconic images were taken 30 years ago, when the Third Awakening or so-called Singing Revolution took place. This documentary that includes these well-known historic shots as well as new, previously unseen 35 mm materials that have been digitized for the first time, is about the people who took these images - former Riga Film Studio Newsreel department cinematographers, directors and others, told in their own voices, their own emotions and memories. From dramatic to comic events, from excitement to fear, from pride to disenchantment - the film offers a spectrum of human experiences, intertwined by an ever-present sense of duty - to film and in that way preserve the moment for the history.
