Almost 40 years this organization unites the Latvian filmmakers. Many of them have been awarded in domestic and international film festivals. To avoid hurting their self-respect, they are mentioned in the abstract alphabetic order: Aloizs Brencs, Hercs Franks, Talivaldis Margevics, Ivars Seleckis, Davis Simanis, Janis Streics. The late Juris Podnieks and Andris Slapins also were members of the Filmmakers Union.

Latvian Filmmakers Union is a nation-wide public organization uniting professional filmmakers and craftsmen. Its main objective is to represent and defend their professional and social interests.

The membership of Latvian Filmmakers Union may be individual and as well as collective. There are 240 individual members working in different genres and representing distinct cinematographic professions and a number of smaller professional organization-like the Guilds of Directors, Cinematographers, Art Directors...
It is a member of the European Artists' Council.

Closely co-operating with the National Film Center of Latvia, a State body responsible for the film policy, the Latvian Filmmakers Union cares for the development of cinematography, for the promotion of Latvian film abroad as well as for the co-operation with the film people and their organizations in other countries.

The Latvian Filmmakers Union initiated the tradition of the national film festival LIELAIS KRI..STAPS ("Big Kristaps") in 1977. The festival has become a regular event in the film life of Latvia and it takes place every two years. The last issue of the festival took place in the year 2000.

The Latvian Filmmakers Union in co-operation with the National Film Centre of Latvia and the Riga Film Museum, since summer 2000 issues a quarterly magazine "Kino Raksti" (Film Writings)

At the moment over twenty feature films by prominent Latvian filmmakers are available, but the variety is gradually increasing.
