Screen version of a popular novel by famous Latvian writer Vilis Lacis. The film shows Latvian fishermen's life in 30-ies. The central character is a young fisherman Oskars Kava, who is a very strong personality, independent, self-contained and proud. As Oskar is fisherman's son, he knows from the early childhood those men's hard work and is aware of all their problems. He considers it his duty to unite fishermen against the arbitrariness of fish buyers. He also thinks that the best way out, is to establish a co-operative. Very touching is Oskar's love towards a village beauty Anita. The talented actors' work in the main and also episodical characters, veritable depiction of life, interesting scenes and very good cinematographer's work - all this together made this film very popular.
