The film, based on a short story by Latvian classic Rudolfs Blaumanis, reveals the dilemma of the main character Madara - to give way to love feelings or acquire economic security marrying an old rich man - brings her to a moral crash. The central story of the film consists of the character development of this woman. Madara comes from a poor peasant family. She sacrifices her youthful love in order to acquire the position of a wealthy farmer's wife and gradually turns into a typical representative of a wealthy landowners of the end of 19th century. After the death of her rich husband, she tries to get the love of her farm labourer but in vain. The death of her little son does not save the situation but only makes the original mistake hurt more.
