An action of the romantic film takes place in the distant times, when German landlords ruled in Latvia. The main characters are several brave peasants, who are fighting against duke's arbitrariness. This man wants to take away one of those peasant's - Janis - bride Marta, as he thinks he has the first night's rights. After a succession of all kinds of adventures and comic misunderstandings, everything ends well, as it should be in films of this kind. The loving hearts unite, but the brave peasants are released from serfdom.
