Based on fiction (Janis Rainis play "Love Stronger Then Death") and Latvian folclore (the legend about the Rose of Turaida). This is a dramatic story about a very beautiful girl Maija, called "The Rose of Turaida", about her life and tragic death. The action takes place in the 17th century Latvia. It was a time of endless wars and black death - plague, when one of the most beautiful regions of Latvia - Vidzeme was ruthlessly torn apart by Polish and Swedish troops, making the oppresion of German feudal lords even more difficult.
And this is the background of a love story between Maija and Kaspers. Then a Polish officer sets his eyes on Maija and wants to possess her, but she rejects him. One day they meet in a Gutman cave, where Maija has come expecting to meet Kaspers. When she discovers his malicious intentions, and that she can not escape, Maija prefers death to dishonour.
