Rich visual tableaux, elaborate use of symbolic imagery and powerful performance make this film a truly cinematic exploration of man's inner world, with its incessant search for spiritual fulfilment. The picture is a drama of a weak man, whose life could have been better. His fate is revealed with the help of three episodes from his life: in his young days, when he, although totally in love, is under the influence of his bitchy mother; in mature age, when he is almost broken, by a very hard life; and then again in the period of his life, that makes him, a widower and he looks back at his past.
