World War II. The front line is steadily moving towards the East. In the occupied territories the Germans act fearlessly and bravely.
On the terrace of the war hospital several soldiers relax. In the little meadow just around the corner Klaus Junge is getting ready for a chess game. There is nobody to disturb his contemplation on the chess kingdom. Suddenly a partisan jumps out of the bushes and takes Klaus as a hostage ... However, the chess game captures the attention of both the partisan and the victim ... The kings fight with each other.
