Film studio TRIS (Three) was founded in 1991.
Activities include production of all types of films and videos.
The outstanding Latvian film director Gunars Piesis Maija and Paija and the popular actor and director Gunars Cilinskis Indrani made their last films in the film studio TRIS.
Janis STREICS created the film A Child of Man (Cilveka berns), which in 1992 won the Grand Prix at the international Sanremo Film Festival in 1992, as well as the local Latvian film award Lielais Kristaps. The film also won prizes at the Chicago and Moscow festivals. It was screened in the Prague, Seoul film festivals and at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
In 1995, director Aivars FREIMANIS finished the feature film The Nest (Ligzda). It was awarded the Stockholm International Film Festivals FIPRESCI diploma. Actress Dace BONATE received the prize The Amber Panther at the 2nd Kaliningrad Film Festival and a medal at the local Latvian Lielais Kristaps award for best female role. The Nest received the Bronze Rose at the International Bergamo Film Festival in 1996. The film was screened at the Rotterdam, San Francisco, San Sebastian, Vancouver, Mannheim, Dunkirk, Grinning, Melbourne and Wellington film festivals, as well as the Paris video library, 1st European Film Forum in Strasbourg and the New York Museum of Modern Art.
The script-writer and director Talivaldis MARGEVICS has maid film portraits of poet Knuts SKUJENIEKS, composer Peteris VASKS, academician Janis STRADINS and Catholic Archbishop Janis PUJATS.
Director Biruta VELDRE finished a documentary Welcome Home(Labdien, Jusmajas) in 1999, which is devoted to the tragic fate of rural Zvarde and its inhabitants.
The video film by Rolands KALNINS Eternal Faust (Muzigais Fausts, 2000) tells of the significance of Goethes FAUST in the development of Latvian literature, language, publishing, culture and theatre. It highlights the convergence of world cultures and their mutual development.
At present, video films about Latvian writers Janis Akuraters, Maris Caklais and Andrejs Eglits are being made in the studio.
